Scent Brings Guests Home for the Holidays

(ARA) – For many of us, scent is an integral part of the holiday season. Aromas awaken our senses, remind us of a favorite place or time, and reflect our personal style.

As fall settles in and the holidays approach, scents can create the welcoming ambiance we hope guests will feel as they enter our home. Candles enhance that ambiance with their warm glow and it’s essential to find the right scent to complement the setting.

The experts at Pier 1 Imports offer the following advice for choosing the right scent for your home:

“Scents that remind us of baking, like Sugared Pecan, Apple Cinnamon and Freshly Baked, are must-haves for this holiday entertaining season,” says Amy Fredericksen, a buyer for Pier 1. “They create a casual feel and invite guests to relax.”

Fragrances can also help spice things up, adds Pier 1 buyer Beckie Grunthaner.

“Classic scents like Ginger Peach, Patchouli or First Rain make a subtle statement of elegance, familiar warmth and even romance,” Grunthaner says.

If you are looking for creative ways to visually freshen up your home, you can also try using an assortment of candle holders or candlescapes. Anyone can create a unique design by pairing a variety of sizes and textures. Grunthaner also adds that it is important to find your signature scent. By pairing candles with potpourri, reed diffusers and room sprays you can create your own unique aroma.

“Our sense of smell can have a very strong association to emotional memories,” Grunthaner says. “Different fragrances can evoke different feelings or bring back memories. Baking aromas give a house a nostalgic feel that might remind us of our grandmother baking cookies. Or try a spiced fragrance, to create a more romantic or exotic feel.”
